Peptides for Skin: What a 50+ Year Skin Expert Wants You to Know

Peptides have gone from skincare science to skincare shorthand. Firming? Peptides. Fine lines? Peptides. Collagen support? Peptides again. They are now one of the most talked-about ingredients in modern skincare, and peptide serums have quickly earned a permanent place on beauty shelves.

But there is one problem: “peptides” can mean many different things.

Different peptides for skin are designed for different roles. Some are studied for signalling pathways associated with collagen and skin firmness, others act as carriers, while some have entirely different functions. Which means the more useful question is no longer “Does this contain peptides?” but “Which peptides are in it, and what are they actually doing?”

For answers, we turned to someone who has watched skincare ingredients become breakthroughs, buzzwords and everything in between: Dinyar Workingboxwalla, celebrity aesthetician and skin expert with more than 50 years of experience.

Here, he breaks down the science behind peptides in skincare, what to look for in a peptide serum, where the evidence stands, and whether skincare’s most talked-about ingredient really deserves the attention.

Q1. What exactly are peptides?

Before we talk about peptides in skincare, it is important to understand where they come from.

Peptide science did not begin in beauty. It comes from biology and medicine. Scientists have studied peptides for decades because they perform important roles throughout the human body, including signalling and communication between cells.

Put simply, peptides are short chains of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks used to make proteins, including structural proteins relevant to our skin.

When we talk about topical peptides, however, we are talking about specific molecules incorporated into skincare formulations for particular purposes.

I often explain it this way:

If collagen is part of the workforce supporting skin structure, certain peptides act more like messages.

They do not replace the skin's natural processes. Their role depends on the peptide being used and the formula around it.

“Peptide” is not the name of one ingredient with one function.

It describes an enormous family of molecules. That is why understanding the benefits of peptides for skin requires looking beyond the word itself and asking which peptide a formula actually contains.

 

Q2. How do peptides work on the skin, and what is their role?

Skin is not simply a covering over the body. It is a living, constantly changing organ.

Every day, skin responds to signals involved in maintaining its barrier, structural proteins, and its response to the environment.

Certain peptides are designed to interact with pathways involved in these processes.

For example, some peptides have been investigated for signalling associated with collagen production. Carrier peptides can deliver elements such as copper. Other peptide types are studied for their potential influence on processes associated with collagen breakdown.

This is part of the reason peptides for skin have attracted so much interest: rather than being one universal active, different peptides can be selected for different jobs.

But I always remind people that no peptide serum for face replaces the fundamentals.

Sun protection, adequate nutrition, hydration, and consistency still matter.

 

 

Q3. Which skin concerns are peptides best suited to: fine lines, firmness, pigmentation, hydration or barrier repair?

Peptides are most commonly discussed in relation to signs of skin ageing, particularly fine lines, texture and loss of firmness.

As skin changes with age, its structural environment changes too. Certain peptides have been studied for roles connected with collagen-related pathways and skin firmness.

Depending on the peptide and formulation, peptide skincare may be considered for:

  • Fine lines

  • Loss of firmness

  • Changes in skin texture

  • Supporting smoother-looking skin

  • Overall skin resilience

Some formulations may also combine peptides with ingredients that support skin hydration and the skin barrier.

Pigmentation is different. Peptides would not usually be the first ingredient I think of for every pigmentation concern. Ingredients such as niacinamide, tranexamic acid and vitamin C may have more direct relevance depending on what is causing the pigmentation.

The lesson is simple: one ingredient should not be expected to solve every skin concern.

Good skincare usually comes from ingredients doing different jobs well.

 

 

Q4. How many different kinds of peptides are there? Are all peptides created equal?

No. And this is one of the most important things to understand before buying a peptide serum.

“Peptide” represents a very large family of molecules, not one universal skincare solution.

Just as vitamin C and tranexamic acid are used for different reasons, different peptides can also have different functions depending on their structure.

Their usefulness depends on factors including:

  • The specific peptide

  • Its intended function

  • Concentration

  • Stability

  • Delivery

  • The rest of the formulation

  • The evidence behind its use

Simply seeing “peptides” on a label isn't enough.

Ask three questions instead:

Which peptide is being used? Why is it there? What evidence supports that use?

Q5. Can a good diet supplement peptides in the skin?

A healthy diet is fundamental to healthy skin, but nutrition and topical peptides do not work in the same way.

Our bodies naturally produce many peptides involved in biological processes. To build and maintain tissues, the body needs adequate protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals from food.

But eating protein, collagen peptides or a collagen supplement does not mean those molecules travel unchanged to the skin and behave exactly like a topical peptide.

Digestion breaks dietary proteins and peptides down before the body uses their components through its own metabolic processes.

So I see nutrition and topical skincare as two different routes.

Nutrition provides the body's raw materials. Topical skincare provides targeted ingredients at the skin surface.

Neither makes the other unnecessary.

Amino acids, peptides and, proteins are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Think of amino acids as individual letters, peptides as short words made from those letters, and proteins as much larger, more complex sentences.

 

 

Q6. What are peptides best paired with in skincare?

I prefer to think about the formula around a peptide rather than looking for one “perfect pairing.”

Hyaluronic acid supports hydration and a fuller, more supple appearance. If you want to understand that mechanism more deeply, it is worth learning how hyaluronic acid for skin actually works.

Niacinamide can support barrier function and overall skin appearance.

Chamomile is commonly used for its soothing properties.

And moisturising ingredients can help create a comfortable environment for a routine containing actives.

Enzymes participate in many normal skin processes, including the remodelling of structural components.

Certain peptides have been investigated for their ability to interact with specific enzymatic processes. This is where discussions around peptides and collagen breakdown can become particularly interesting.

4. Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides

These are responsible for some of the industry's most dramatic comparisons.

Certain peptides have been developed to influence signalling associated with facial expression. This has led to the popular “Botox-like peptide” description.

But that comparison needs context.

A topical cosmetic and an injectable medical treatment do not work in the same way.

 

 

Q8. How strong is the scientific evidence behind topical peptides?

The science around topical peptides has developed considerably, but not every peptide has the same level of evidence.

Research has investigated certain peptides for aspects of skin appearance including hydration, texture, firmness and visible signs associated with ageing.

But results depend on the individual peptide, its concentration, stability, delivery and the complete formulation.

This is something I have learned repeatedly in more than five decades of working with skin:

A promising ingredient is not automatically a miracle ingredient.

The quality of the formulation matters.

This is also why I encourage people shopping for a peptide serum for ageing skin or peptide serum for skin firmness to read beyond the headline claim.

The word “peptide” is the beginning of the investigation, not the end.

 

 

Q9. Are there ingredients that should not be layered with peptides?

Peptides are generally considered well tolerated, but I pay attention to the whole routine, not just the peptide.

The bigger problem often comes when people try to use everything at once.

Strong exfoliating acids, retinoids and several active products layered together can create irritation for some skin types. When the routine becomes too aggressive, maintaining a comfortable skin barrier becomes more important than adding another active.

That does not mean peptides and retinol are universally incompatible.

It means formulation, frequency, individual tolerance and the rest of your routine matter.

If you already use multiple actives, understanding retinol and the skin barrier can be more useful than memorising a long list of ingredients that supposedly can or cannot touch each other.

 

 

Q10. Can topical peptides really relax facial muscles or mimic injectable treatments?

This is where we need to separate interesting science from ambitious marketing.

Injectable neuromodulator treatments act through mechanisms and at sites that a topical cosmetic cannot simply reproduce.

Certain neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides are used in skincare aimed at softening the appearance of expression lines.

But a topical anti ageing serum cannot reasonably be described as equivalent to an injectable procedure.

I think expectations matter enormously here.

Skincare can support skin quality. It cannot completely replace medical procedures.

And it should not need to pretend that it can.

 

 

Q11. Are there risks, side effects or people who should avoid peptide products?

For many people, topical peptide products are generally well tolerated.

But “well tolerated” never means every formula suits every person.

A reaction can come from the complete formulation rather than the peptide itself. Very sensitive or reactive skin should introduce new products gradually, and patch testing is sensible if you have a history of reactions or allergies.

I would also avoid assuming that adding more actives automatically produces better results.

Sometimes the most sophisticated thing you can do for your skin is simplify the routine.

After more than five decades of studying and working with skin, one lesson remains clear to me:

The best skincare is not about chasing the newest ingredient. It is about understanding your skin and choosing science that supports it.

Peptides are an exciting example of how biological research has found its way into modern skincare. But every advancement should begin with the same principle: understand the biology of the skin, respect how it functions, and then decide what genuinely deserves a place in your routine.
